Nicely written, Dave. Except that I've gotta push you some on number 1. How is it that we experience Jesus? In a song? In a scripture? In a feeling? In a sermon? In a video?

We experience Jesus in each other. There ain't no way, as a worship leader, that I can get you to experience Jesus by putting together a worship gathering. You'll experience Jesus as we interact, as you see His grace and love reach into your life thru touches from other people reaching out to you and sharing His life in their interaction with you, mostly outside of the room where we gather to worship together.

I gave up trying to help people "experience Jesus" a few years ago. Now I try to arrange and present a opportunity for them to more easily open up and express the deep parts of their hearts and spirits to God. Of course, that's where your "participatory" comes in.

I take my cue from the apostle Philip, when he introduced his friend Nathaniel to Jesus - "We have found Messiah. Come and see." And then I try to stay out of the way.

Good job, Dave.

Kyle you are exactly right. Too often we go to a conference or a friends church and we decide that we can do the same thing and when we do it the effect is not the same. We then walk away feeling like we did something wrong or that our church sucks. When in reality you did not consider your audience in your planning.

Good point!

Know your community.
I see this time and time again, the service is made up of other peoples ideas and what works for their church, not what works for your church. If you could simple be in touch with your community (kind of like point 4) I think church services would be very different.
my 2 cents
