Easter as a Minister
Waking up on Easter morning and crawling out of bed to quietly slip into the living room. It was there that I would find that much coveted basket overflowing with candy. At that very moment while everyone was still asleep, I would sit down and start eating all the candy that I had received from the “Easter Bunny!”
Today, as a minister Easter has found a way to lose the joy of getting up early and hunting for eggs. Having a good time get pushed aside as I have to be up early and headed to church well before anyone else wants to get up. With three kids this is really frustrating. So, what can we do?
A couple of years ago, my wife and I decided that Easter was a fun time that we wanted to share with our boys. After much deliberation we decided that there was no law about Easter being on a Sunday when it comes to celebrating it as a ministry family. So we moved it to Saturday. Now, this is what our day looks like.
Friday night we hide all the eggs and build the baskets
Saturday – early wake up, egg hunt is on; then we have a large breakfast of some sort; share the story of Christ and pray together; then we are off to clean up and head out to do something fun together.
Too often as minister our families get slighted on the holiday thing. I would love to hear your ideas on how you balance the holiday and your role in the church.
