Tagging the top High schools
In a recent article US News and World Report mapped the current “big things” in American high schools. The results are fairly interesting and very applicable to student ministry. I my 16 years of Youth Ministry experience I have never done a ton of mentoring. I tend to believe that it would be incredibly beneficial but have not really put any effort into making it a reality in my ministry. The results of this study make me wonder if I should not try to create a mentor program that would be primarily for my core students. Anyways, here are the results of their research.
Ranking the top schools in the country they found these five common denomenators.
1. Real world partnerships
2. Peer-learning (students teaching other students)
3. Access to mentors
4. Higher standards (they expected more and got more)
5. Parent connections
Just think if we could find ways to incorporate these five principles into our ministries would we really assist students in deepening their relationship with God. Could the mentors, standards, parental connections all have something that maybe we are missing in our ministries.
