Aging conferences need…
In a culture that has become extremely aware of what it means to be Postmodern and desires to gather together in multi-generational services, why do we not support one another? As I strive to deal with this question, please note that I am guilty of this as much as anyone else.
I am currently sitting at the Missouri Christian Convention. A gathering of around 1,100 Christians from all over the state of Missouri, made up mostly of those who are older. The North American Convention is a gathering that reaches into the thousands and brings in exhibitors by the hundreds. Yet, it is getting older as well. The younger generations are simply not supporting it. There is negative talk that surrounds what goes on at those conventions.
When are we, those under the age of forty, going to step out and support the things that have been a support system for the churches through out the generations? I know that for so many of us we look at it and we simply feel that it is not done well. Or the preachers are not that exciting to us, by name only. Many of us have never even heard a lot of the guys that show up, we just know that it’s not Francis Chan or Perry Noble. Thank goodness our congregations don’t think the same way we do about these conventions. Each of these guys comes and preaches the Gospel and that alone is not bad. Yet we continue to create all kinds of excuses.
When can we put those things aside and simply go and support our brotherhood? Why don’t we step out and offer our services in leadership? When can we just start lifting them up positively? There is a bigger picture than our own simple ideas. If we are so supportive of generational worship then we have to step out to them as much as we expect them to be open to us.
I am personally making a decision to support and become a bigger part of the conferences that are struggling to reach the younger generations. Will you join me in being a part of our past, so we can continue in the future?
